Do You Need A New Spice In Your Life?

Let’s get spicy

 

All jokes aside, spices are part of the kitchen magic that takes food from, "yeah dinner's done to....when is this going to be ready to eat, it smells freaking delicious." In the kitchen, chefs are the mad scientists; whipping up combinations of foods enhanced with almost countless combinations of herbs and spices. 

 

Here are some tips on which spices to combine and which foods those spices can be used for. You will notice there are also some herbs added with these spices. 

 

 

Ranch spice mix:

1/4 cup dried parsley

1 tablespoon dried dill

1 tablespoon granulated garlic 

1 tablespoon granulated onion 

1/3 teaspoon dried basil 

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 

 

Great for making a dressing or dip...obliviously. But this can also be used when making roasted or grilled vegetables to help them pop a little. It goes great with mild vegetables, such as zucchini, spaghetti squash, and/or cauliflower.  

 

Italian seasoning mix:

3 tablespoon dried parsley 

3 tablespoon dried basil 

2 1/2 tablespoon dried oregano 

1 teaspoon dried thyme 

1 tablespoon granulated garlic 

1 teaspoon granulated onion 

1 teaspoon dried rosemary 

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 

 

Great for roasted, grilled, or even sautéed vegetables. Great option for chicken, pork, beef, and delicate fish, such as cod. 

 

McCormick Savory spice blend

1 1/2 teaspoon oregano 

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 

1 teaspoon paprika 

1 teaspoon granulated garlic 

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon black pepper 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

 

Great option for cabbage stir-fries, riced cauliflower, and/or roasted rutabaga. Good option to use with pork, chicken, and/or mild fish. 

 

All-purpose Blend

2 tablespoon Walden farms walnut maple syrup 

3 tablespoon coarse salt 

3 tablespoon smoked paprika 

1 tablespoon granulated garlic 

1 tablespoon ground black pepper

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 

1 teaspoon celery seed, crushed 

 

Good option to use with roasted Brussel sprouts, green beans, butternut squash, and/or even acorn squash. Good option for pork butt, pork tenderloin, pork loin, roasted chicken, baked or grilled ham. 

 

Taco Seasoning

1 tablespoon chili powder 

2 teaspoon granulated onion 

1 teaspoon ground cumin 

1 teaspoon granulated garlic

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 

1 teaspoon oregano 

1 teaspoon salt 

 

Good with ground beef, pork, chicken, turkey, chorizo, and/or even firm tofu that can be used as a taco filling. Goes good with roasted or grilled vegetables. 

 

Fajita mix

2 tablespoon chili powder 

4 teaspoon cumin

2 teaspoon coriander 

1 teaspoon granulated onion

1 teaspoon granulated garlic

1 teaspoon oregano 

1 teaspoon smoked paprika 

2 teaspoon coarse salt 

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 

1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder 

 

Great for making flank steak, skirt steak, top round steak, pork butt, chicken thighs, and mild fish. Good option for stir-fried or grilled bell peppers and onions. 

 

Cajun Spice mix

2 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt 

1 tablespoon dried oregano 

1 tablespoon paprika 

1 tablespoon cayenne 

1 tablespoon ground black pepper 

1 teaspoon granulated onion 

1 teaspoon granulated garlic 

 

Great option for shrimp, scallops, chicken thighs, pork butt, pork belly, salmon, and mild fish. Great option for roasting, grilling, and w/o sautéing vegetables. 

 

Mediterranean seasoning mix 

2 tablespoon dried basil 

2 tablespoon dried oregano 

2 tablespoon coarse salt 

1 tablespoon parsley 

1 tablespoon granulated onion 

1 teaspoon ground black pepper 

 

Good option to use with roasted Brussel sprouts, green beans, butternut squash, and/or even acorn squash. Good option for pork butt, pork tenderloin, pork loin, roasted chicken, baked or grilled ham.
