The Forgotten Forests

As climate change progresses, there are clearly challenges that will need to be overcome in order to help preserve the world around us. This is a challenge with the current agricultural system that is used to feed populations around the world.

That being said, what are a few methods that can be applied in order to promote sustainability, help reduce added stress to the environment, and supply high quality nutrition for communities around the world?

Urban Gardening:

Urban gardening is more well-known because it is easier to spot, and has been easier to put into action. Urban gardening can be seen throughout the world by raised garden beds in cities of all sizes. There are gardens popping up in green spaces in both large and small cities. You can find them in areas such as old school fields, empty lots, vast grass zones that businesses don't want to cut, and even roof top gardens. Urban gardens provide large amounts of food from a small space, which is perfect for feeding large and small cities.

Ocean Gardening:

Ocean farming is a newer concept that is starting to take off in the United States. These ocean gardens help to rebuild reefs that will, in turn, help to protect water-front cities from dangerous storm surges. Kelp farms are in a bottleneck stage at the moment due to the lack of demand for kelp here in the US. The kelp farmers are in need of customers and companies able to process the freshly harvested kelp.

Vertical Gardens:

Vertical gardens are gaining ground. These are gardens that are literally growing vertically in urban areas. They can take shape along skyscrapers, in larger patches along buildings, and even roof top gardens. Vertical gardens are great ways to introduce plants to the concrete jungles of large cities around the world. They help to reduce energy costs for the buildings and also convert CO2 to oxygen, reducing the cities overall CO2 emissions.

Here are a few examples that are already out there.

Breaking the pattern of conventional farming, that requires foods to be shipped from hundreds of miles away, will be the way of the future. This means eating seasonally will no longer be just a hip thing to do. Sourcing food locally means adjusting to eating foods that are available seasonally. It will better support urban gardens, local conventional farms, green house gardens, and newer forms of sustainable agriculture. The days of year-round berries, that are shipped in from California and Mexico, need to be a luxury of the past if we want to help reduce climate changes.
