Children Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes Continues to Rise
That's right its a sad thing to say but the amount of children diagnosed with diabetes is on the increase. But this is not an increase in type 1 diabetes it is an increase in type 2 diabetes. In fact just a few decades ago type 2 diabetes was very rare among youth and adolescent populations. Fast forward to the 1990s and the trend begins that has yet to slow; a world wide increase in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes among adolescent populations. These are children between the ages of 10-14 and and teens 15-18 years old that are going to be struggling with this disease for the rest of their life unless they make the right lifestyle changes.
Here is an article that really goes into the prevalence of this global health crises: http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/1117p32.shtml
So why do I bring this up? Because its important to know that a poor diet doesn't just affect one person it effects everyone around them. As an adult you are a role model to the younger generations via parent, grandparent, aunts and uncles, a community member, fellow church member, sport coaches, the list goes on and on. Kids pick up on their surroundings so if all the adults they see are eating diets loaded with processed foods and simple carbohydrates then that's what they know. As a community we need to focus on increasing the importance of a healthy diet so that our younger generations grow up wit the right foods.
Its time to make a change in the food world cooking at home eating meals made from basic ingredients that support the local community. This seems to be a trend at the moment but it need to be the norm not just a "cool" thing to do.
Ok done with today's soapbox. I thought everyone should be aware these changes you're making will effect more than just you.
